Advice before coming on your TEFL course

TESOL courses are intensive, requiring a lot of commitment. You must be ready to work hard and give fully of yourself for four weeks. You will spend your day at school and then spend most of your evenings and weekends doing assignments and preparing lessons.

Clear your diary and tell your friends. Make sure you haven’t promised to go on that fabulous weekend away during the TEFL course … there is no time!

Come along in a healthy condition. The TEFL course is very busy and if you are not in good health, you may struggle. Get plenty of sleep and good food before you come. Also try to come at a time where your life is not in crisis … if you’re in the middle of a divorce or recovering from a bereavement, you may not be able to concentrate fully.

Sort out your accommodation to suit your needs. Doing a TEFL certificate is quite demanding and it is really important that you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Get organised and prepare for your TESOL training. Buy your files, paper and all your stationery requirements beforehand. Check the pre course pack for all our suggestions.

Do the pre course tasks and try to learn from them. Read the TEFL books on the book list and make notes on the key chapters. Perhaps most importantly, try to improve your language awareness.

Collect any magazines and articles which you feel are of interest and may be useful in a language lesson. Very often we use authentic materials in teaching EFL and so texts from newspapers, authentic menus, DVDs etc. may well be useful during the course. Also, you may wish to start building up a collection of pictures from magazines which you may want to use in your lessons.

Sort out anything which might take up valuable time during the TEFL course. If your fridge is empty, fill it up. If you need to send emails to friends, do it now. If your bank manager wants a meeting, arrange it for before the course starts.

Come along fit, healthy, enthusiastic and able to dedicate yourself to your TEFL course. You will be glad you did so!
