TEFL, TESL or TESOL?
Are you confused… don’t be! There are many acronyms used to describe English language teaching and they are often used interchangeably.
TEFL = teaching English as a foreign language. This is for people whose first language is not English but who want to learn it for pleasure or for their job.
TESL = teaching English as a second language. Usually this is for those who have English as a common second language in their country, possibly in official communication and administration.
TESOL = teaching English to speakers of other languages. This is often used interchangeably with TEFL, but it often includes people who may be living in an English speaking country who are not native English speakers.
